Britons waste £169 billion
New research from Abbey Savings suggests that Britons have wasted over £169 billion buying big ticket items that are rarely used. It states that the average Briton has made £3,685 worth of pointless purchases.
The most costly purchases on the list are clothes, fine china and inappropriate shoes.
Men are more wasteful on gadgets than women with 28% of men owning a video camera or games console that is rarely used (compared to 25% of women).
Women are more wasteful on clothes than men with 58% of women owning clothing they hardly ever wear, and a further 45% owning uncomfortable shoes (compared to 40% and 23% of men, respectively).
There are 24% of Britons who have bought an exercise machine that is hardly ever used with the average person using their equipment just 9 times a year. A further 25% of people own a bicycle they hardly ever use, and 8% of us are a member of a gym that we hardly ever visit.
