Managers work an extra 40 days per year

A survey into working hours has shown that the average British manager works the equivalent of 40 days a year in unpaid overtime.

The survey asked more than 1,500 managers, and found 89% regularly worked more than their contracted hours: typically for one hour and 18 minutes per day.

According to the Trade Union Congress (TUC), almost five million Britain's regularly do unpaid work. The reason for the unpaid overtime is to keep up with a high volume of work, to meet deadlines, or in some cases simply to 'stay ahead' of the workload.

The survey found that female managers are more likely to control their workload, or that their family commitments force them to better manage it. Only 16% of female managers worked over 48 hours per week, compared to 35% of men. Likewise, just 3% of female managers worked over 60 hours per week, compared to 7% of men.
